Bryker Woods
Bryker Woods has got to be one of my personal favorite neighborhoods in Austin. It may be the quaint and unpretentious cottages and bungalows mixed in with the many newer remodels, which all seem to be neatly maintained and well kept, or it may be my fond childhood memories of growing up in the neighborhood just two blocks away from my elementary school. My mother taught 1st grade at Bryker Woods elementary for a long time, and I remember walking to and home from school, and taking my little sister for walks around the neighborhood to visit with our friends. Glenview Avenue was the street where I learned how to ride a bicycle without training wheels. Instead of evenings spent in front of the television, my sister and I were always outside playing in the yard, and yes, even in the streets when my father was with us. This is a typical scene in Bryker Woods. Many families, young and old, reside here, and everyone seems to appreciate the wholesomeness that this neighborhood exudes.
Homes in Bryker Woods
Bryker Woods is bordered by West 35th Street to the North, MoPac to the West, and Shoal Creek runs along the Eastern border. It stretches down to just around Westover on its Southern border, right before you head into Pemberton Heights. The lots are abundant with large mature trees which shade the streets and the pretty homes that do not take up too much space on their lots. The Bryker Woods Neighborhood Association has been very successful in keeping the zoning and building/remodeling restrictions tight. Many believe this is what has preserved the charm and beauty of this neighborhood. The average sale price of homes sold in Bryker Woods in 2008 was $495,000 with an average square footage of around 1,650 sqft. Because the real estate is so highly sought after in this neighborhood, homes do not usually sit on the market for very long.
