Buda, TX
The city of Buda Texas is located in Hays County, between Austin and San Antonio, just 17 miles south of Austin on I-35. Buda borders its neighbor Kyle, Texas. While both are incorporated cities, many locals refer to them as "Buda/Kyle." Buda, which was originally named DuPre, was founded in 1881 when Mrs. Cornelia A. Trimble platted the town. She inherited the 550 acres nestled between Onion Creek and the International and Great Northern Railroad from her second husband, A. N. Hopkins after he was murdered. The lots of DuPre were auctioned off the day after Cornelia Trimble filed the plat. Several businesses quickly sprang up in DuPre, including the Carrington Hotel, which was built in 1882 by L.D. and Sarah Carrington. Apparently, Mrs. Carrington insightfully arranged to have the International and Great Northern Railroad make stops at the hotel for meals. The hotel soon became well known for serving good meals to hungry railroad travelers prepared by two widows (“viudas” in Spanish) who worked and cooked at the hotel. This became a very popular stop along the rail line and at one time the Carrington Hotel was said to have fed 1,000 people in a day. Because the “v” is not pronounced in Spanish, people often said they were going to go and see the “budas” instead of “viudas”. In the fall of 1887, postal officials became aware that another Texas town was also named DuPre. By the time Du Pre was forced to find a new name for itself, the Carrington hotel was already being referenced as “the Buda House.”
Buda is growing at a very impressive rate. As of 2000, the population of Buda, TX was 2,404. Today, in 2008, the population has more than doubled at over 5,000. In fact, Hays County and the surrounding areas are expected to grow from a present population of about 140,000 to 185,000 in 2010, then climb to 285,000 by 2020. Due to its convenient location, close proximity to Austin, and increase in commercial development, Buda has become a “hot spot” for growth. Though it is rapidly growing in size with new businesses and housing developments sprouting up left and right, Buda still has that “small town” feel, and they like it that way.
