The city of Kyle Texas is located in Hays County, between Austin and San Antonio, just 20 miles south of Austin on I-35. Kyle borders its neighbor Buda, Texas. While both are incorporated cities, many locals refer to them as "Kyle/Buda." Kyle was founded in 1880 by Fergus Kyle and the family of David Moore, who were settlers of nearby communities of Blanco and Mountain City. Kyle was once considered “The Gateway to Texas Ranch Country” and was conveniently situated on major rail lines and transportation thoroughfares. The families of David Moore and Fergus Kyle donated 200 acres of land for a town site when the International and Great Northern Railroad built a line from Austin to San Antonio. Lots were first sold in October 1880 at an auction held beneath a famous Live Oak tree at what is now known as the Kyle Auction Oak located at 204 Sledge Street. Kyle’s rich history in the Cotton Business and its ranching Heritage are what gives this old Texas Town’s residents a strong sense of pride and a tight community.
Today, Kyle is the 2nd largest city in Hays County and is named the 6th fastest growing city in Texas, with an annual rate of 125% growth. The estimated population of Kyle jumped from a little over 5,000 in 2000, to over 25,000 in 2007. In fact, Hays County and the surrounding areas are expected to grow from a present population of about 140,000 to 185,000 in 2010, then climb to 285,000 by 2020. The Austin and San Antonio Business Journals have recognized Kyle as the 2007-08 No.1 “Hot Spot” in the Austin/San Antonio Corridor for commercial investment and development.
